Harry Potter: Books v/s Movies

Do you know what angers me the most? It is when people claim to be Harry Potter fans by having just seen the movie. Let us deep dive into why the books are 100x better than the movies and how the movies have changed the stories and the characters.

Let us start with the Golden Trio, In the books all three of them have equal roles. There is not one person that stands out. In the movies, Ron is treated like a punching bag. He is the butt of all the jokes, he is made to look stupid and all the good lines, jokes, and witty comments are given to Hermione. Harry too has some bright moments in the book, but sadly half of them are given to Hermione.

Not trying to throw shade on Hermione, she is one badass and probably one of my favourite characters. I just do not like the idea of the directors giving her all the lines.

The other character that has been ruined by the movie is Ginny Weasley. She is one strong woman, who does not take shit from anyone. Though she likes Harry in the books she does not lose her individuality over that. She is strong, opinionated, amazing at charms and a hack of a quidditch player.

People who have just seen the movies are not even aware of major characters like Peeves, Winky, and Ludo Bagman. The major plot points that make the story that it is, is what is essentially left out from the movies. The movie watchers have no clue why S.P.E.W is important and how Hermione had gone to great lengths to fight for the rights of house elves.

The other major scene that is lost is the scene where we are introduced to the Gaunt family. It plays a crucial role in the book as it gives insight into why Voldemort is the way he is (kind of an origin story).

The other thing that bugs me about the movies is how there is no ending given to Harry and the Durselys. In the book, it is beautifully written how Petunia and Dudley in their own ways show Harry how important he is and that they care for him.

Regulus Black, plays a crucial role in the book series, particularly in “Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince.” In the books, his actions related to one of Voldemort’s Horcruxes and his redemption arc are explored, but this character and his backstory are largely omitted from the movies. Kreacher and 12 Grimmauld Place are also not given much importance or screen time in the movies.

There are so many scenes that I could go on and on. Fleur has great moments in the books that are omitted from the movies. Luna’s character is not given proper justice, Dobby is not mentioned again after the 2nd movie and the mysteriously comes back in the 7th movie.

All I am saying is read the books. Get to know the characters, their complexities and why the books have the fandom that they have. Do not judge a story by its movie when you can read the book.
